ABOUT ABOUT

SEPTA, in partnership with the City of Philadelphia, the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, and the University of Pennsylvania are pleased to host international transit consultant Jarrett Walker in Philadelphia to give his lecture Abundant Access: Public Transit as an Instrument of Freedom. In this lecture, Walker leads us beyond some of the distractions that can dominate debates about public transit, to an understanding of public transit’s core power: to give people freedom.

Jarrett Walker, PhD, is an international consultant in public transit network design and policy.  He has been a full-time consultant since 1991 and has led numerous major planning projects in North America, Australia, and New Zealand. He is President at Jarrett Walker + Associates, based in Portland, Oregon, and Principal Consultant with MRCagney in Australia.

He is the author of the popular public transit blog HumanTransit.org, and the book Human Transit: How Clearer Thinking about Public Transit Can Enrich Our Communities and Our Lives (Island Press, 2011). This book is a friendly, non-technical introduction to transit’s underlying geometry, and the real value judgments that must be explored to make both transit and development policy. His background integrates an arts and humanities PhD (Stanford, 1996) with decades of technical experience in all aspects of transit and its role in city-building. He is a frequent keynote speaker, teacher, and facilitator of decision-making processes.

The lecture will take place at Myerson Hall, B1 at the University of Pennsylvania on Monday, December 5th at 6:30PM. Tickets are free, but space is limited; so attendees are asked to register and display tickets at the door.

This lecture has been approved by APA for 1.5 CM credits. Ask for details at the door.
